4013 PARTICIPANTS FINISH THE TWO-DAY, 60KM WALK TODAY
September
11, 2011 (Toronto): It was announced yesterday that 4013 participants came together with the unified goal
of ending all women’s cancers. Participants in the ninth annual Shoppers Drug
Mart® Weekend to
End Women’s Cancers™ have
raised $9.4 million for The Campbell Family
Cancer Research Institute at The Princess Margaret.
Today, two-day participants will finish their 60km walk, greeted by
family and friends as they cross the finish line. The Weekend will wrap up
around 3:00pm today at Downsview Park with an emotional closing ceremony.
The Weekend is a life changing experience
for many, including Jessica Strasberg, who is a fourth year walker and
currently battling breast cancer. “This year is very special for me. The past
three years I have walked in support of other women who are battling cancer,
but now, I am the one battling cancer. This year I am also walking for my
family and especially my daughter, so one day she won’t have to face the diseases
that touch so many of our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives."
To date, The Weekend has raised over $121
million, enabling The Princess Margaret to support research programs and
clinical trials, seed-fund the breast cancer rapid diagnosis pilot which is now
The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre, expand the surgical
robotics program for gynecological patients, purchase breast MRI and digital
mammography machines and continue to support the first in-hospital Survivorship
Clinic and Program in Canada.
“The
community continues to come together and inspire all of us at The Princess
Margaret,” says Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Hospital
Foundation. “The dedication from all the walkers, crew, volunteers, donors and
corporate sponsors is inspiring. A huge thank you to everyone who made this
weekend an enormous success.”
The Princess Margaret gratefully acknowledges the event sponsors for
their commitment to this cause: Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, Royale, Pareto, The Pickle
Barrel, Johnson & Johnson, Suzy Shier, Trade Secrets, Coca-Cola,
GlaxoSmithKline, LUNA, I Love Rewards, Steam Whistle, Colio Estate Wines,
Advanced Tent Rental, CP24, 104.5 CHUM-FM, AM740 and The New Classical 96.3FM.
The tenth annual Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is scheduled for September 8-9, 2012.
