WALKERS EMBARK ON THEIR 30 KM OR 60KM JOURNEY
IN THE NINTH ANNUAL
SHOPPERS DRUG MART® WEEKEND TO END WOMEN'S CANCERSTM
September
10, 2011 (Toronto): Today, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation
announced that 4013 participants raised $9.4 million in the 9th annual Shoppers Drug
Mart® Weekend to End
Women’s Cancers™. After an
emotional opening ceremony at Downsview Park, participants began their one-day,
30 km walk, or two-day, 60km journey.
A staggering one in seven Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast
or gynecological cancer in her lifetime. The Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is fighting to end all women’s cancers, including
breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, and vulvar cancers.
“The Weekend continues to allow The Princess Margaret to make great
strides in our mission to conquer cancer in our lifetime,” said Paul Alofs,
President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. “A huge thank you
to all walkers, crew, volunteers, donors and corporate sponsors. Everyone
involved in this Weekend is a true hero.”
To date, The Weekend has raised over $121
million, enabling The Princess Margaret to support research programs and
clinical trials, seed-fund the breast cancer rapid diagnosis pilot which is now
The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre, expand the surgical robotics program for
gynecological patients, purchase breast MRI and digital mammography machines and
continue to support the first in-hospital Survivorship Clinic and Program in
Canada.
“We’ve made a great deal of progress in the last ten years, but we need
to keep moving forward,” said Dr. Benjamin Neel, Research Director at The Campbell
Family Cancer Research Institute at The Princess Margaret. “The continued
support of The Weekend community allows us to procure new leading edge diagnostic
equipment and enables scientists to make continued progress in clinical trials
and research advancements.”
Later today, one-day walkers will complete their 30 km walk. Two-day
walkers will arrive at Downsview Park to camp overnight. Once at camp, all participants
will enjoy an evening of activities and special entertainment. Tomorrow, two-day
walkers will embark on the second half of their journey and finish back at
Downsview Park for a memorable closing ceremony.
The Princess Margaret gratefully acknowledges the event sponsors for
their commitment to this cause: Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, Royale, Pareto, The Pickle
Barrel, Johnson & Johnson, Suzy Shier, Trade Secrets, Coca-Cola,
GlaxoSmithKline, LUNA, I Love Rewards, Steam Whistle, Colio Estate Wines,
