Princess Margaret Hospital announced today that 4,633 participants have raised $10.8 million in the eighth annual Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™.
Since The Weekend began in 2003, over $102 million has been raised for the Princess Margaret Hospital.
After an uplifting Opening Ceremony at Princes Gates, participants embarked on the first 30km through the streets of Toronto. Their day’s journey will end once they reach “Tent City” at Downsview Park for evening activities, special entertainment and a night of camping.
Two-day walkers will complete the 60km walk on Sunday with a memorable closing ceremony that will mark the end of this incredible weekend. Friends and family are invited to greet the walkers and cheer them on as they cross the finish line.
One in seven Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer in her lifetime. The Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ has broadened its mission beyond breast cancer and is now fighting all women’s cancers, including ovarian, uterine, cervical and vulvar cancers.
Over the past seven years, the funds raised through The Weekend have enabled The Princess Margaret to make sizable advancements, such as creating a comprehensive breast imagining program and purchasing a breast MRI and digital mammography machine, supporting critical clinical trials for breast cancer patients, making clinical enhancements and adding research programs, including genetic counseling and condensing wait times for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plans with the pioneering Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre.
Princess Margaret gratefully acknowledges the event sponsors for their commitment to this cause: Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, CP24, 104.5 CHUM-FM, New Balance, Royale, Dasani, Canada Dry, Johnson & Johnson, Breyers, Colio, Trade Secrets and Cold FX.
The ninth annual Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is scheduled for September 10-11, 2011

QUOTES: Paul Alofs - President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation
I am truly inspired by those who are doing the walk and I am proud to be among all the walkers this weekend. The dedication to this event year after year continues to bring in critical dollars that bring us steps closer to conquering cancer in our lifetime. A huge thank you to the walkers, crew, volunteers and all our donors.
Dr. Jonathan Irish, Chief of Surgical Oncology, Princess Margaret Hospital
We have seen a great deal of progress in the last ten years, and The Weekend funds continue to allow scientists at one of the top five cancer centres in the world continue to further refine research and treatment. With 9,200 new cases of gynecological cancers being diagnosed last year, we are broadening the scope to fight all women’s cancers to make an even bigger impact and affect more lives.
Jacqueline Livie, 8-time participant in The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers
I have walked every year since the event’s inception and will proudly continue to walk until we conquer this terrible disease. I continue my own battle with cancer, but am surrounded by an enormous support group this weekend as we are all in this together. For all those who have been touched by women’s cancers and for those who unfortunately did not win their fight, we walk in their honour.
